Kenyan-born politician Samuel “Sam” Mwangi has won a seat on the Champlin City Council in Minnesota, United States, following the November 3, 2026 elections.

Mwangi secured victory in the Ward 4 special election after receiving 1,178 votes, representing 41.30% of the total votes cast, according to results published by the City of Champlin.

He defeated three other candidates in the race, emerging ahead of Lorraine Coan, who received 990 votes (34.71%), Ryan Reider with 393 votes (13.78%), and Charles A. Boakai, who garnered 273 votes (9.57%).
Mwangi Wins Ward 4 Special Election
The Ward 4 contest was a special election held to fill a vacancy on the city council. The position became vacant in March 2026, prompting the council to appoint Lorraine Coan as an interim representative while residents waited to elect a permanent officeholder.

The November election was intended to fill the remaining two years of the term, which runs from January 2027 through December 31, 2028.
Mwangi’s 41.30% share of the vote placed him ahead of all three competitors, making him the leading candidate in the four-way contest.
Election Results Await Official Certification
Although the City of Champlin has published the results, it has indicated that they remain unofficial until they are canvassed by the City Council.
The canvassing process is scheduled for November 9, 2026, after which the results are expected to receive formal confirmation.

Mwangi’s victory marks a notable political milestone for the Kenyan-born candidate and adds to the growing visibility of people with African backgrounds in local American politics.
His election will see him take up a role in local government, representing residents of Ward 4 as the city continues its municipal leadership work.
