Kenyan environmental activist Truphena Muthoni has announced plans to mobilise the country for an ambitious tree-planting challenge targeting one billion trees within 24 hours.

The proposed world-record attempt is scheduled for April 22, 2027, coinciding with World Earth Day, an annual international event dedicated to environmental protection and climate awareness.

Muthoni announced the initiative in a video shared on social media on November 1, 2026, alongside Kenyan content creator and amateur boxer Mbavu Destroyer and Australian environmentalist Jimi Cohen.

The organisers hope to bring together communities and environmental supporters across Kenya to participate in what could become one of the country’s largest coordinated tree-planting exercises.

Speaking about the initiative, Muthoni said the target was to plant one billion trees within a single day, expressing confidence in Kenya’s ability to host the ambitious undertaking.

According to Muthoni, the proposed challenge will bring together participants from different parts of the country in an effort to achieve the one-billion-tree target.

The April 22 date was selected to coincide with World Earth Day, giving the initiative an opportunity to connect with international environmental conservation efforts.

Australian environmentalist Jimi Cohen is also involved in the proposed undertaking. He described the exercise as part of an effort to encourage nationwide participation in tree planting.

Kenyan personality Mbavu Destroyer has also joined the initiative, helping bring public attention to the campaign through his social media presence.

The scale of the target means the organisers will need extensive coordination, seedling preparation and participation from communities, environmental organisations and other stakeholders.

Truphena Muthoni’s Previous World Record Achievement

Muthoni is not new to environmental campaigns and record-breaking challenges.

She gained international recognition after completing a 72-hour tree-hugging challenge in Nyeri County in December 2025.

Her achievement was officially recognised by Guinness World Records in January 2026, earning her the title for the longest marathon hugging a tree.

The challenge attracted attention to the importance of protecting indigenous trees and promoting environmental conservation.

Her achievement also strengthened her public profile as a young environmental activist advocating for the protection of nature.

Muthoni’s Role in Kenya’s 15 Billion Tree Campaign

Following her tree-hugging achievement, Muthoni received a Head of State Commendation and was appointed an ambassador for Kenya’s 15 Billion Tree Growing Campaign.

The government initiative aims to grow 15 billion trees by 2032 as part of broader efforts to increase the country’s tree cover and address environmental challenges.

Her proposed one-billion-tree challenge aligns with the wider national conversation around reforestation, climate change and environmental protection.

Trees play an important role in absorbing carbon dioxide, supporting biodiversity, protecting water sources and reducing soil erosion.

However, successful tree planting also requires proper selection of species, suitable planting locations and long-term care to ensure seedlings survive and grow.

A Major Challenge Ahead of April 2027

The proposed one-billion-tree target presents a significant organisational challenge.

Achieving it would require widespread public participation, sufficient seedlings, suitable planting locations and a reliable system for recording and verifying the number of trees planted.

The organisers will also need to consider how newly planted trees will be maintained beyond the event.

While the world-record attempt is the main attraction, the long-term environmental impact will depend on how many seedlings survive and develop into healthy trees.

For Muthoni, the initiative represents another opportunity to use her growing public platform to encourage environmental responsibility.

As April 22, 2027, approaches, attention will turn to preparations for the nationwide exercise and the level of participation it attracts.

If successful, the campaign could place Kenya at the centre of an international environmental conservation conversation while encouraging more people to take part in protecting the environment.
