Kenya Records Eighth Confirmed Ebola Case

Kenya’s Ministry of Health has confirmed one additional Ebola case, bringing the country’s total number of confirmed infections to eight as authorities continue efforts to contain the outbreak.

Director-General for Health Dr Patrick Amoth announced the latest case after 38 people were tested on Sunday, October 18, 2026. One person returned a positive result, according to the health official.

The latest patient is a 49-year-old man who developed fever, headache and muscle pain before testing positive for the virus.

The announcement comes as health authorities intensify surveillance and monitor people who may have been exposed to the infection.

New Patient Was a Hospital Support Attendant

Dr Amoth said the man was not a healthcare professional but worked as a patient attendant, handling tasks that included cleaning utensils and linen at a health facility.

Authorities believe he may have been exposed to the virus while in contact with Kenya’s first confirmed Ebola patient, who died at a Nairobi hospital on October 5.

The 49-year-old reportedly developed symptoms on Saturday, October 17, before testing positive the following day. He has since been isolated, with health officials preparing to provide treatment.

The case highlights the importance of monitoring not only medical personnel but also other workers who may come into contact with infected patients or contaminated materials.

Kenya’s Ebola Cases Linked to First Patient

Kenya reported its first confirmed case earlier in October involving a Kenyan man who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The man travelled to Nairobi through Uganda and died at a Nairobi hospital on October 5. Subsequent infections were identified among people linked to his care, including relatives and health workers.

Before the latest announcement, the Ministry of Health had reported four additional cases on Saturday, October 17, bringing the total to seven. The latest positive test raised the number to eight.

Health authorities have been tracing contacts and placing exposed individuals under monitoring to identify potential infections early and reduce the risk of further transmission.

Health Officials Intensify Containment Measures

The Ministry of Health continues to rely on isolation, testing, contact tracing and surveillance as part of its response.

Reports published on October 19 indicated that 128 of 130 identified contacts had been traced and placed under quarantine for monitoring. Officials have also increased screening at key entry points as part of efforts to detect suspected cases.

Dr Amoth has also reported that patients receiving care were responding well to treatment. Authorities continue to assess the situation as investigations into the latest infection proceed.

The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, a form of the virus for which there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment, according to reports on the current outbreak. Medical care and supportive treatment remain important in managing patients.

What Kenyans Should Know About Ebola

Ebola can spread through direct contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person, or through contaminated materials. It does not spread through the air like common respiratory infections.

Symptoms may include fever, headache, muscle pain, weakness, vomiting and diarrhoea. These symptoms can also occur with other illnesses, so anyone who is concerned about possible exposure should seek professional medical advice rather than self-diagnose.

Kenyans are encouraged to follow updates from the Ministry of Health, avoid spreading unverified information and comply with guidance from public health officials.

Ebola Case Total Rises as Monitoring Continues

The confirmation of the eighth case is another development in Kenya’s ongoing response to the Ebola outbreak.

Authorities are continuing to monitor contacts and manage confirmed infections, while investigations seek to establish the circumstances surrounding each case.

The latest figures underline the importance of early reporting, testing and coordinated public health action. The Ministry of Health remains the key source for verified updates as the situation develops.
