Mombasa United Earn Promotion to the Kenyan Premier League
Mombasa United FC have secured promotion to Kenya’s top-flight football league for the 2026/27 season after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) awarded them a 2–0 victory over Kariobangi Sharks following an abandoned promotion play-off.
The decision was delivered on Friday, October 9, by the FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee, which ruled that Kariobangi Sharks had forfeited the second-leg match played at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi on October 6.
The ruling confirmed Mombasa United as the overall

winners of the promotion and relegation play-off, earning the coastal club a place in the SportPesa League, also known as the Kenyan Premier League.
The outcome marks an important milestone for Mombasa United and gives the coastal region another club to support in the country’s top football competition.
Why FKF Awarded Mombasa United a 2–0 Win
The second-leg encounter was abandoned in the 64th minute after tensions escalated following a penalty awarded to Mombasa United by referee John Sulwe.
Kariobangi Sharks players protested the decision, and the situation deteriorated when members of the club’s contingent and some supporters entered the pitch.
According to findings cited in the FKF ruling, Sharks’ kit manager Patrick Paul Otieno and a section of supporters were involved in an incident in which the referee was physically assaulted.
The match official was assessed by the medical team and indicated that he could not continue officiating. The match commissioner subsequently called off the encounter.
The federation applied Articles 3.3.2 and 3.3.3 of the Rules and Regulations Governing Kenyan Football (2019) in deciding that Kariobangi Sharks would forfeit the match.
As a result, Mombasa United were awarded a 2–0 victory for the second leg, settling the immediate uncertainty over which club would secure the top-flight place.
How the Promotion Play-Off Unfolded
The two clubs entered the decisive second leg knowing that the result would determine their league status for the 2026/27 campaign.
Mombasa United had won the first leg 2–1 in Mombasa, giving them an advantage heading into the return fixture in Nairobi.
However, Kariobangi Sharks were leading 2–1 in the second leg when the match was abandoned. That score had left the two teams level at 3–3 on aggregate, setting up a tense finish before the penalty incident brought the contest to an early end.
The match could not resume, leaving the FKF committee to review the circumstances surrounding the abandonment and determine the official outcome.
The subsequent ruling went in Mombasa United’s favour, confirming their promotion to the top flight.
Mombasa United Prepare for a New Challenge
Promotion to the Kenyan Premier League presents Mombasa United with an opportunity to compete against some of the country’s established football clubs.
The club will now face the demands of top-flight competition, where consistency, squad depth and tactical preparation will be important throughout the season.
For the team’s supporters, the promotion is also a significant moment for football in Mombasa and the wider Coast region.

The club’s rise provides an opportunity to attract more supporters, strengthen its profile and build on the momentum generated by the play-off victory.
Mombasa United will need to turn that momentum into strong performances as they begin their campaign against more experienced top-flight opponents.
Kariobangi Sharks Face Relegation After the Decision
The ruling also has major consequences for Kariobangi Sharks, who were competing to retain their place in the top division.
The FKF decision confirmed that Sharks had forfeited the second leg, allowing Mombasa United to win the play-off and secure promotion.
The federation has also referred matters relating to the reported violence and misconduct during the match to its Disciplinary Committee for further proceedings and possible sanctions.
This means the promotion decision has been made, while the disciplinary issues arising from the abandoned fixture remain subject to a separate process.
The incident has renewed attention on player conduct, match officials’ safety and the importance of maintaining order during high-stakes football matches.
Mombasa United Promotion Marks a New Chapter
Mombasa United’s promotion is now confirmed following the FKF committee’s decision to award them a 2–0 win in the abandoned play-off.
What began as a closely contested battle for a place in the top division ended with an administrative ruling after the match could not continue.

For Mombasa United, the decision opens a new chapter in the club’s history and brings the challenge of competing in the 2026/27 Kenyan Premier League.
For Kariobangi Sharks, it marks a setback after their attempt to preserve their top-flight status ended with the forfeiture ruling.
As Mombasa United prepare for their new campaign, attention will turn to how the club performs against Kenya’s leading teams and whether it can establish itself in the country’s top football competition.
