How the fatal collision happened

The incident occurred during stoppage time at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, with Tenerife and Andorra level at 2-2.

De Miguel was chasing a long ball near the halfway line when Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his penalty area in an attempt to intercept it.

The two players collided at speed, with Owono making contact with De Miguel, who immediately fell to the ground.

The goalkeeper was shown a straight red card following the incident as players from both teams rushed to call for medical assistance.

Medical personnel attended to the striker on the pitch for several minutes before he was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The match was subsequently abandoned in the 108th minute, with both teams and supporters left deeply shaken by the incident.

Medical personnel managed to restore his pulse while he was being transported to hospital, and he was admitted to the intensive care unit at the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Although the club initially described his condition as stable despite the severity of his injuries, a subsequent medical update revealed that his neurological condition had deteriorated.

He eventually died at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

In its announcement, Tenerife expressed profound grief, saying there were no words capable of easing the pain experienced by his family, teammates and supporters.

The club also appealed for respect for the family’s privacy during the difficult period.

Police open investigation into the incident

Spanish police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter following the player’s death, according to the Associated Press.

The investigation will examine the circumstances surrounding the collision, although no finding of criminal responsibility has been established.

Owono was sent off during the match, but the circumstances of the incident remain subject to investigation.

Tributes have poured in from some of football’s biggest institutions.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and La Liga expressed their condolences to De Miguel’s family, teammates and Tenerife.

Former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, who is the majority shareholder of FC Andorra, also expressed his sadness over the tragedy.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced the postponement of scheduled Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches on Tuesday as a mark of respect.

Real Madrid also observed a minute of silence during their training session.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the unpredictable dangers of physical collisions in football, although fatal incidents of this nature remain extremely rare.

For Tenerife, the loss is particularly painful. For Spanish football, it is a reminder of how quickly a sporting contest can turn into a devastating tragedy.

Jesús de Miguel leaves behind a career built on determination, hard work and his contribution to Spanish football.

May he rest in peace.
