Police in Kisii County have destroyed 6,510 litres of illicit alcohol known as kangara following a targeted raid on an illegal brewing site in Riana Ward.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers from Kerina Police Station conducted the operation on Saturday, October 17, 2026, in Mwata Village, where they discovered the illicit brew and destroyed it alongside the equipment used in its production. The operation targeted illegal alcohol production in the area.
The raid forms part of ongoing security efforts to curb the production and distribution of illicit alcohol, which authorities say poses risks to public health and community safety.
The NPS reiterated its commitment to intensifying operations against illicit brews and narcotics across the country, while urging residents to share timely information that could help officers identify illegal brewing sites.
However, police had not disclosed whether any suspects were arrested during the operation or the estimated value of the destroyed brew and equipment.
Crackdown on Illegal Alcohol
The latest operation highlights the continuing challenge authorities face in dismantling illegal alcohol production networks in Kisii County.
Previous crackdowns have also resulted in the destruction of large quantities of illicit brew. In May 2025, for instance, police destroyed approximately 5,000 litres of kangara in the Kiogoro area and arrested four suspects.
Authorities continue to call for cooperation between security agencies, local administrators and residents to help prevent the manufacture and sale of illegal alcoholic drinks.
The success of the latest operation will ultimately depend not only on destroying existing stocks but also on identifying those responsible and preventing production from resuming.
